BEHIND THE FLITERS :
DISCOVERING THE HIDDEN IMPACT,
- Exploring how social media addiction silently affects students.
BEYOND THE LIKES, BEHIND THE LIES
GROUP FORMATION:
We are a group of enthusiastic students who came together to explore a social issue that affects almost every student’s daily life social media addiction. At the beginning of our project, we formed a group circle to brainstorm ideas and selected our group leader and deputy leader to guide the research process. Each member played a vital role from research and analysis to presentation and documentation. This collaboration helped us develop teamwork, communication, and leadership skills.
IDENTIFYING THE PROBLEM:
During our initial discussions, we noticed a growing concern among students excessive use of social media. Many students spend several hours daily scrolling through platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat, often unaware of its deeper consequences. We identified that this habit wasn’t just consuming time but also affecting mental health, productivity, and real life relationships.
SHORTLISTING THE PROBLEM:
Our team considered multiple topics, but after careful analysis, we decided on “Hidden Impact of Social Media Addiction Among Students.” This topic was relevant, relatable, and important because most students face this issue but rarely realize its hidden effects.
DATA COLLECTION:
To understand the real impact, we collected data through questionnaires, surveys, and interviews from students of different age groups. We asked questions about their screen time, study habits, emotional well-being, and social interactions. The results clearly showed that most studentsused social media for more than 4 hours daily, often at the cost of their studies and sleep.
ROOT CAUSE IDENTIFICATION:
After analyzing the data, we identified several root causes behind social media addiction:
Peer pressure fear of missing out on trends
Boredom using social media as a time-filler
Need for validation seeking likes, comments, and attention
Lack of self-control and awareness
Easy access to internet and smartphones
These causes often go unnoticed, yet they strongly influence students’ behavior
EFFECTS OF THE PROBLEM:
The hidden impacts of social media addiction turned out to be far-reaching:
Decreased academic performance due to reduced focus
Sleep deprivation and tiredness from late-night scrolling
Anxiety and low self-esteem caused by comparison with others
Reduced real-life communication and increased isolation
Procrastination and poor time management
These findings showed that what starts as entertainment can silently turn into a harmful habit.
SHORT TERM SOLUTION:
Conduct awareness sessions in schools and collegesEncourage digital detox weekends
Use apps to monitor and limit screen time
Practice mindful usage turning off unnecessary notifications
LONG TERM SOLUTIONS:
Introduce counseling programs for digital wellnessEncourage offline social activities and hobbies
Create policies in schools to promote balanced digital habits
Educate students about healthy technology use from an early age.
IMPLEMENTATION PLAN:
We designed an implementation plan focusing on awareness and behavior change. Our team created awareness posters, shared survey findings, and held small group discussions to help students understand the dangers of social media addiction and how to control it.
This practical approach allowed us to see how awareness can lead to small but meaningful changes in student behavior.
CHECKING EFFECTIVNESS:
To evaluate our plan, we conducted a follow-up survey among the same group of students. Many participants reported that they had started limiting their daily screen time and focusing more on studies and real-life interactions.
This positive change proved that awareness and self-control can make a big difference.
CONCLUSION:
Our research on Hidden Impact of Social Media Addiction Among Students made us realize how deeply social media can affect our minds, habits, and relationships without us even noticing.By identifying the root causes and applying practical solutions, we learned that balance is the key social media is a tool, not a trap.
We hope our work encourages more students to use social media responsibly and prioritize their mental well-being.
